Extracellular matrix

The skin is our protective shield against extracorporeal impacts. The skin avoids the loss of humidity from tissues and protects against exsiccation. This main function is mediated by the incorporation of components of the extracellular matrix in the extracellular space between the cells.
The barrier function of the skin is mainly mediated by the enclosure of lipids in the extracellular space between the cells of the cornified layer (stratum corneum)  [1].
